Buck Martin

Ralph “Buck” Martin came to Bowling Green State University (BGSU) as an Assistant Professor in Mathematics Education in 1970.  He developed and directed the BGSU Math Clinic and was active in committee work at the departmental, college, and university levels.  He served as president of the Greater Toledo Council of Teachers of Mathematics and editor of the newsletter.  He chaired committees of National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) at the national, regional, state, and local levels.  Buck Martin was serving as president elect of the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM) at the time of his death in 1977.

Buck Martin was a member of Sigma Pi Mu, Phi Delta Kappa, and Kappa Delta Pi honor societies.  He was an active participant in community sports programs.

Before coming to Bowling Green, Buck Martin taught high school mathematics in LaGrange, Illinois, and was coach of the high school tennis team.  He was a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa and received his doctorate from the University of Kansas.  He taught at Kansas State Teachers College for one year prior to accepting a position at Bowling Green State University.

Buck Martin enjoyed working with students and felt a deep commitment to their success.  Above all else, he enjoyed life and lived each day to the fullest.
