Myrtle Miller

Myrtle Miller graduated from Miami University with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1964.  She taught in the public schools for 34 years at levels from third grade to eighth grade.  She spent a majority of her teaching career at Prairie College Elementary in Canton, Ohio.  She dedicated much of her time and energy to the advancement of mathematics.

Myrtle was a past president of the Greater Canton Council of Teachers of Mathematics and also served as the treasurer for the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM).  As a speaker and workshop leader for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and OCTM, Myrtle was an inspiration to many teachers.  Her superintendent once wrote “One of her best attributes is her ability to venture into new methods and ideas and obtain successful results.”  She did “hands on” math before the term was invented.

Recognized as a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar and honored by OCTM as the Outstanding Mathematics Teacher of the East Central Ohio District in 1982, she will long be remembered for her enthusiasm, dedication, and faithful service to students, colleagues, and parents.  A fellow teacher states “Myrtle was truly my mentor and the reason that I became so involved in mathematics education”.
