Sister Marijane Werner

Sister Marijane Werner began her teaching career at St. Joseph Elementary School in Alliance, Ohio in 1937.  After teaching in the Catholic schools for 27 years, Sister Marijane joined the Kent State University College of Education as a mathematics specialist.  She served for 15 years and earned the rank of associate professor.  Sister Marijane was a pioneer in research on the impact of calculators on mathematics education and designed a course for microcomputers  at Kent State University.  Shortly before her death, she was awarded emeritus professor of elementary and secondary education at Kent State University.

Sister Marijane was a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Akron, Ohio.  She received her B.S.E. in 1946 and her M.A. in 1955 from the University of Akron.  She received her Ph.D. in Administration from Boston College in 1968.  Sister Marijane was recognized as an authority on metric systems.  In 1982, she was awarded a metrication specialist certificate from the United States  Metric Association.

Sister Marijane was a member of numerous professional organizations including the National Education Association (NEA), the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), Delta Kappa Gamma, and Phi Delta Kappa.  She served on the Elms School Board for 6 years and was elected to the Community Assembly for four years.
